Wonderboy

Saturday night I saw Wonderboy by the Joe Goode Performance Group. This modern dance company is known for mixing artistic disciplines in unexpected ways to brilliant effect. Even so, I was skeptical about seeing a dance performance that involved a puppet. Joe Goode didn't let me down as the lone puppet, Wonderboy, captivated my attention with his deeply personal journey. Through puppetry, dance, singing, powerful monologues and an amazing original score the performance touched me in ways that still resonate strongly. The extremely well done puppetry (accomplished through collaboration with puppeteer Basil Twist) and amazing dance moves all supported the intense awe, fear and excitement of this overly sensitive puppet who bravely decides to become a part the scary world outside his window. The score was also powerfully emotive and stands alone and some brilliant work by Carla Kihlstedt & Matthias Boss.

I find this kind of artistic collaboration so inspiring. Now if only I could find a puppet, dancer, lighting designer, costume designer and touring company to work with...

because there’s nothing that amuses me more than hearing your pathetic opinion
