Mike, Michael and I spent the weekend in San Diego, "the only area in the United States with perfect weather." Apparently the weather gods were in a cantankerous mood this Memorial Day because it was mostly rainy, cloudy and chilly while we were there. That meant no beach time for this bum and isn't beach baking the number one reason to visit southern California? This is the second time I've been there and not been able to hit the infamous nude beach, Blacks Beach. Grrrr.
We did navigate the rain to walk around the Gaslamp Quarter one morning (major yawn), Coronado Island (the "amazing views" obscured in fog) and Old Town (aka the tourist convention). Balboa Park was nice and we saw some good art. Saturday night we went back to the Gaslamp Quarter to get dinner and it was loudly humming with diners, clubbers and game goers. We didn't participate in any of the nightlife while we were there, but if the puke on the sidewalk that we had to step over is any indication, I'd guess San Diego nightlife is pretty happening. I'm not sure I want that kind of nightlife to happen to me, but it's "happening" nevertheless.
It was nice to get away for a few days, but we were all glad to have been able to change our flight to be back home Sunday afternoon instead of later that night. I've had a lot of people tell me how much they love San Diego. Either they are on the payroll of the San Diego tourism bureau or they've experienced a whole different side of the city. With what I've seen on two different trips, I can't say I'm inclined to go back.
This past weekend Mike's mom visited and I did a photo shoot of her to get material for her 70th birthday party later this year. She's a sassy, energetic woman and a lot of fun to be around. The shoot was fun and we got some great shots of her.
Sunday night Mike and I went to an awesome 80s dance where people couldn't stop smiling while they danced and sang along. It was the best dance I've been to in a long time. I had to tear myself away so I could get a little bit of sleep before my Monday morning wake up call.
After the first wave of layoffs at work, I've found myself fairly busy again as I take on some of the duties from a colleague who was let go. While the extra work has been mostly annoying, menial tasks it's felt good to actually be productive and needed at work.
Tonight I head to San Diego with my men for the weekend. Michael has a conference there. Mike and I are going along to persuade him to skip much of said conference.
"I'd stalk you, but I'm entirely too lazy."
People say the sweetest things online.
I work at a biotech company that is facilitating drug studies for prostate cancer. About 6 months ago one of our three drug studies failed. It was by far the largest and most promising of our studies. Our stock has plummeted and employees have been abandoning ship with reasonable concerns that the company will go belly up. This is why I've had so little to do at work the last couple of months.
At our peak we had about 70 employees. As of last week we had 38 due to employees finding other jobs. Now we're in the midst of layoffs. After this Thursday we'll be down to about 23 people. After July 15th, down to a 15 person skeleton crew to keep the company alive long enough to be bought out or miraculously acquire some successful new drug study. I'm part of that skeleton crew which sounds like it would work out well for me financially, but it's still kinda crazy working some place that is slowly plummeting to its death.
At work, in an effort to stave off boredom and burn off some creative energy, I decided to try to create an uber-trendy scarf out of paper clips. I had a vision of this glittering chain mail scarf trimmed with black binder clips. I saw myself as the next great thing to hit Project Runway and expected high fashion experts to be flocking to my front door any day now with offers to fund my latest line of office supply daily wear.
Well, there's a little problem with the whole paper clip scarf plan. You see, linked together paper clips don't really know that they are supposed to stay all flat and fabulous. I mean, I told them to do that, and even helped them believe in their potential to be flat and fabulous. And the paper clips were looking kinda cool sitting on my desk all glittery and edgy lying nicely flat in their properly assigned rows.
Then I picked up my carefully crafted creation to reveal... the biggest cluster ball of knotted paper clips I've ever seen.
I cursed under my breath as I untangled some 300 paper clips and gave up on my dreams to be America's next top fashion designer. I couldn't even bring myself to photograph the disaster for your viewing pleasure. Just picture a huge mound of unfabulous paper clips and you've basically got the right idea.
It was a wonderfully social weekend with a great art closing reception Friday night, several friends over for a relaxing garden potluck Saturday night, scoring lots of great deals at the Alameda flea Sunday morning, a brief appearance at San Francisco's bear bar Sunday afternoon before seeing the kick ass Iron Man movie. In the midst of all that was beautiful weather, time with my men and some down time at home. All-in-all, it was a great weekend and I vote we skip this whole weekday thing and have another weekend right away.
For my birthday Greg went to KidRobot and bought me a glowing Munny figure.
He comes with 4 "secret" accessories. Mine came with goggles, a sword, a spray can and... a cape! This Munny is ready for his superhero spotlight.

The idea is to decorate your near featureless Munny with crayons, markers, stickers and paint. But I'm loving my amorphous superhero too much to change him one bit.
He currently sits on a dresser in the bedroom glowing valiantly as I head off to sleep, protecting me from the evil that lurks under the shadow of darkness.
That whole lack of sleep thing the last few weeks totally killed my blogging inspiration. I mean, how many ways can I say "I just want to get some damned sleep!" before I start sounding like a bitch & moan thesaurus? I finally got some sleep over the weekend and was feeling nearly normal again, but the last few days I've been back to pain and not sleeping great again. Today is my Friday so hopefully I'll find some more rest this weekend. Of course on this "Friday" the auditors have arrived to review first quarter financials. I'm so not happy to see them.
