I just finished reading the four issue mini-series, Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things written and illustrated by Ted Naifeh. I totally loved it. It's about an attitude heavy little girl in a world of beasties, crawlies, and all sorts of magical happenings. It's kind of a fairy tale world from a generation x perspective. The story, however, is less fanciful and more jaded than even your modern day fairy tale. The art is breathtaking. It is dramatic, dark, and impeccably polished. Naifeh portrays this gothic, mystical world in perfect detail. Character expressions and attitudes come across clearly. This art not only works in black and white, it really thrives in it. The colored covers tell me that this could work in color, but I'd almost hate to see it. This is an artist/writer who does both incredibly well. It was artfully done in all respects.
Naifeh wrote a follow-up mini-series, Courtney Crumrin and the Coven of Mystics. The trade paperback comes out in September. I can't wait to read that as well.
